spoilers in videos What do you guys think of the most popular manga/anime of all time which happens to be the most profitable series financially and statistically for the manga media medium? I really think that to me One Piece should go down as a literary classic. The story is inspiring, constantly interesting, and most importantly never stale even after 13 years of material. -- Characters The series is packed with awesome characters. Luffy is one of a kind despite the many series that followed him with a protagonist who was silly, hard working, and plain f***ing awesome. His story from birth to the very latest chapter is great for me. The rest of the crew all get their moments, and even arcs with some great development and even greater mix for the eventual current Strawhat crew. Nami: I always considered this moment to be an anime scene heard around the world-if there ever could be one. I remember the first time I watched that scene, the perfect buildup of hate for the bad guys and the fact that 4 guys walking on dirt to a 'park' could be so f***ing great. Zoro: This is where to me and many other One Piece fans that Zoro became the official non-official first mate of the Strawhats. The moment (especially in the manga) was such a mixture of badassness and even sadness. This video doesn't give it justice and it certainly doesn't solidify the relationships between Zoro, Luffy, and Shinji the way the manga does. Music in Anime I don't have time to link every song which I wish I could from the anime, but damn here's my favorite one: This was played when the Going Merry 'died'. I laugh and admire Oda for making a moment where a ship sinks more sad than most mangaka can when they kill off a main character. Art The art is, simply, phenomenal. Oda has a lot of assistants but he's obviously a perfectionist, and I thank god for that. I wont post any examples. Go to your preferred manga site and see for yourself. The Greatest Adventure Story Ever Told A crew's hardships along the journey of fighting their past, and sustaining their present so they can look toward the future. I may post more in Naruto, Bleach, HxH, etc topics but I really do think One Piece is one the greatest stories I've ever read regardless of mediums. Well there's my short and limited take. What's yours? |

I'm getting the manga box set when it's released. I'll let you know then. ![]() I've only seen the first season of the anime. It reminded me a lot of Dragon Ball. |

I've never wanted to like a series more than I've wanted to like One Piece. I've tried to read it so many times and each time it just doesn't do anything for me and I say I've given up, only to go back to it later and try again. I don't get what it is, it just doesn't click for me. |

I used to have the same problem. I realized the further I got the more in love I was with the series. Unlike Naruto, Bleach, etc it doesn't have cheap thrills (not that that's bad) but it's more of a payoff when you get t to certain points and things begin to click. |

I'm quite happy to see this topic. Wow. I agree, and for a couple of years I have been saying that One Piece is the best fictional thing I have ever encountered, and even now after delving so far into the world of manga and anime I still believe this to be the case. Anyone will be able able to find most likely more than one character they find endearing in One Piece, as there are a variety of personalities and dreams featured (for example- a cook, a navigator/cartographer, a doctor, an engineer/shipwright, an adventurer, swordsman, musician, historian, political leaders, marines/those who seek to maintain law and order in some capacity and many more). Multiple themes are also covered including slavery, racism, what justice truly means, drug abuse/addiction, the nature of protest, how history can be manipulated, God/religion as a justification for force, class differences, sexism, being judged for the actions of your family and so many other themes. Characters in the series are never one-dimensional standard villains, and instead all have their own motivations, and even characters who only play a role in a single arc are granted character development which surpasses that which more central characters in other series are often given, and as a result some characters who would not be described as main characters are actually ahead of some main characters when it comes to being my favourite characters (examples for me would be Smoker, Wiper, Ace and Whitebeard....Dragon also looks like he will become one of my favourite characters or even my absolute favourite from what I have so far seen). Not only are the character development and plot themes outstandingly strong, but Oda does a fantastic job at creating unpredictable (but not ridiculous) plot twists, and creating suspense by shrouding things in mystery (the best examples being the Skypeia and Water 7 arcs for me, which both had me totally perplexed for a while as I tried to guess how the events unfolding could be possible). The comedy in the series is better than many dedicated comedy series I find, and the saddest moment in any series for me is probably from One Piece, also Gintama has a moment which competes for me. However, One Piece is able to repeatedly make me sorrow, and since this sadness is often caused by a villain of some sort it makes the emotion felt when the fights with the major villains of each arc begin extremely intense, and the satisfaction felt when each strike of a fist, leg or sword lands is greatly increased. Certainly I wouldn't say the fights are One Piece's strong point, however the build up is so strong that the fights become more meaningful than most fights in other series. The anime's greatness is fortified with the addition of a fantastic musical score in my opinion, which often leaves me blown away, or with a wide smile (and hell I'm known for never smiling in photos). When this series ends I will probably cry, and then watch it all again. And then drown my sorrows. edit: btw I would like the opening post (any many other posts on this forum) but my like system often doesn't appear Edited by daman, Aug 31 2013, 05:38 AM.

“Making weed illegal is a little bit paranoid, don’t you think? It’s like saying God made a mistake, you know what I mean? It’s like, you’ve got the whole world and Earth and all its holy creations, right? And God is like, Hmm, lookit, my whole world in all its holy ways, and he’s like, Oh-my-me-oh-sh**, I left weed in here. Yeah right, I left weed in here. Imo while other series do an excellent job being what they should be (for example Space Brothers is a *stellar* slice of life, and Gintama is an excellent comedy) One Piece is the best all-round manga since it touches upon so many issues and has a long intricate plot that few other series can match. edit: yes my full One Piece love is coming through in this topic Edited by daman, Aug 31 2013, 05:46 AM.

Ah. I could never imagine placing Death Note in my top five. It's great, but not perfect by any means, and there are perfect series out there in terms of what they were meant to accomplish. |

I would actually consider that to be a pretty spot-on statement. Series' like Cowboy Bebop which are episodic even and series' like Slam Dunk were made for a purpose and served that purpose pretty perfectly, even if everyone can nitpick small things. |

Agreed. I would consider Cowboy Bebop to be a near-perfect (if not perfect) anime series. My list of what I would consider to be "perfect" manga series is quite long, but I would put Slam Dunk on there. A series doesn't have to be "perfect" to be my favorite, if that makes any sense, but yeah. I really love Dragon Ball and Naruto despite the fact that I would rank them a lot lower in terms of quality. |

Yeh I agree with that idea. Although I don't know how much DN fails at its aim since I forgot which ep I was on and didn't finish it. Is it me or are the poltical/social commentary elements of OP largely ignored by its fanbase? To me that's the main thing that sets it apart from other series, yet nobody ever pays it any notice.... |

I agree that it goes unnoticed and I doubt much of the fan base knows more-less cares. A lot of series, especially Shounen, aim at only a few overly used themes like working hard, never giving up, etc but One Piece sets itself apart by having multiple themes that are more toward the core of people as a whole. |

It's a Shonen fanbase, the sad fact is most people are more focused on power levels than anything else. No real surprise there's a lack of discussion on more serious aspects. |
